The Nanit's Sound&Light app helps parents to monitor their baby's sleep better and protect them, by smart controlling the nanit's devices. The team and I created a unique experience - "Smart Routine".

The Smart Routines feature is intended to add more automated and integrative capabilities,

connecting between the Nanit camera and Nanit S&L, and giving users automated responses for events produced by the camera.

My role: UX design, UI design, animations.

Why are Smart Routines is needed?

Through research done by us about usage patterns of the Nanit S&L device, we have outlined the following:

Users value
🦾  Our users expect more automated capabilities - Users already know Nanit's smart camera for its personalized data display and AI capabilities. That's why they expected the S&L to be an innovative experience that was not found in similar products on the market.

🔮 Getting the most from the Nanit experience - by helping users connect the Nanit's camera and S&L, we can help them get additional value from both products.

Company goals

📈  Monetize subscriptions for users - Expand our user base with Nanit S&L users by conditioning additional features on the purchase of a subscription. Up until this point, there were no subscription plans for the device.

🏆 Winning the Market - While many products are similar to Nanit’s S&L device, Nanit’s integration with its camera offers a more personalized sleep experience based on the child’s behavior.

Main Screens: User Experience & Interface Design

Focusing on optimizing the experience for the target audience with simple, clear flows, while staying consistent with Nanit's language.

01

Linking between devices

One-click connection

Device pairing was only available in the camera app. This decision was influenced by the fact that most of our users access the camera app daily.

At Nanit, user sensitivity was a top priority. Every new feature was introduced with careful consideration of the main live screen to avoid disturbing user flow. Parents are hasten to check their baby’s camera, and placing the drawer on the main screen could overwhelm them. Instead, I designed the drawer to appear on any other screen, ensuring a smooth experience.

I chose the bottom sheet design to make the feature as intuitive as possible. This component keeps the user anchored to the screen, provides a clear CTA with a single prominent button, and enables a quick device pairing process.

Simple animations, short explanations, and clear visuals ensure users immediately understand what to do.

Full-screen mode was made available only to users with more than one camera. This feature leveraged an existing screen, ensuring efficient reuse of resources.

Introducing Smart Routines

Promoting a new feature

The Routines screen in the Nanit S&L app helps parents create customized schedules for smooth sleep and wake transitions. They can set lullabies, white noise, or light settings to turn on and off at specific times, providing a calming and consistent environment for their baby.

The target audience enjoys new features and looks forward to them, but they typically access the app in a rush, either to complete a task or check the camera. So, it was important to highlight the feature without overwhelming them, while still promoting it effectively.

"OK to Wake"

The best example for Smart Routine

The main challenge in designing the screen was to maintain Nanit's graphic language and style, using existing components and user habits to clearly explain how to use the feature.

To make it as easy as possible for our users to quickly understand how to set it up, I used a simple illustration of the device that simulates the real-life behavior using colors and triggers.

The Smart Routines don't include sound, but to maintain the familiar structure for the user, the slider is kept. I used an icon and a disabled design style to indicate this.

Smart protection on the device's physical buttons keeps them inactive, so the child can't turn off the device.
